Have you lost close contact with the lens?

Presenting to audiences IRL (in real life) IS BACK!

I've been invited to speak at a large women's networking event here in Hertfordshire

It will be one of my first in-person presentations since the pandemic, and since Businesses On Screen moved fully online.

It's a great opportunity to reflect on what we've learned about online communications over the last few years, and understand what it means for our in-person presentation skills moving forward.

How has the pandemic changed the way we communicate?

Have you developed bad habits or a level of complacency in front of your daily video calls and conferences?

As we emerge from behind our screens to engage audiences face-to-face, let me share my favourite, most effective and simple top tip to help you remain 'Best Friends Forever' with the lens AND engage your audience IRL:

TOP PRESENTATION TIP

Look me in the eye (and say it like you mean it)!

Yes, you've guessed it...it's the age-old classic 'EYE CONTACT'.

In my 25 years in the TV presenting business, I had nowhere else to look other than straight down the lens at my audience tuning in around the world.

Nowadays, we're all global presenters with our own reflection on-screen drawing our eye away from the lens, and so, losing eye contact with our audience.

Remember, the lens is your friend.

You wouldn't talk to someone staring at their shoulder or their chest (well I hope not anyway!). Look your audience in the eye to get the engagement you need.

If you're on stage, remember to connect and acknowledge members of your audience to evoke the response you need.

While online, why not stick a smiley face just behind your lens to remind you of where to look...and don't forget to smile.
